LiMo Foundation wants to join the Wholesale Applications Community

The Wholesale Applications Community, which was created last month by a group of telecommunications operators, manufacturers and the GSMA, is set to be joined by the LiMo Foundation.

In an open letter, the LiMo Foundation says it's offering its full support, committed participation and practical assistance.

Nokia reveals the C5 smartphone… and a new naming scheme

Nokia has revealed the Nokia C5, which is a compact one-piece mobile phone that's expected to start selling for around 135 Euro SIM-free this summer. It runs the Nokia S60 3rd edition operating system.

The Nokia C5 includes Nokia's free Ovi Maps application along with a contacts list that integrates Facebook status updates. It's equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera and is supplied with a 2GB memory card.

SMS will evolve while retaining its messaging dominance, says report

A report available from mobile software company Comverse (and conducted by Frost & Sullivan) says SMS text messaging will continue its dominance of the messaging arena for the foreseeable future, although it is likely to evolve with additional features over the next three to five years. This evolution is expected to add presence and location information to today's 160-character standard.

European Commission approves Orange and T-Mobile UK merger

The European Commission has cleared the proposed merger of Orange UK and T-Mobile UK. As previously rumoured, the agreement is subject to the amendment of an existing network sharing agreement with '3' (Hutchison 3G UK) and getting rid of a quarter of the combined 1800MHz spectrum of the two companies. As a result, the Office of Fair Trading has withdrawn its request to have the case reviewed in the UK.
