Well, the cat is finally out of the bag. Apple has announced the iPhone 3G S, described as “the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet” (which is hardly surprising). It promises a faster processor, faster data speeds (7.2Mbps HSDPA) and a longer battery life. There’s a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, video recording, voice control and all the benefits of the previously-announced iPhone 3.0 operating system. Oh, and a digital compass. It'll all be available in the UK from 19th June.

Revised charges for using a mobile phone abroad – known as ‘roaming’ charges – have been adopted by the EU’s 27 member states today. These rules were approved by the European Parliament in April and will come in to effect from 1st July 2009. From that date, customers on standard mobile tariffs will pay no more than €0.11 excl. VAT (around 12p) for sending a text message while abroad in the EU.

The Apple rumour-mill is working at full speed today. It now seems pretty likely that a new Apple iPhone (or two) will be announced next week at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference – but the latest suggestions are that Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs could be returning to work at the same time. The new Apple iPhone is expected to be called the Apple iPhone Video, reflecting the main focus of the device. It’ll probably have 32GB of memory, with a 16GB version also available.
