Qualcomm continues to lead the smartphone chip market

Strategy Analytics has published information about the major companies producing applications processors for smartphones during 2013.

It shows that Qualcomm remains the leading producer of smartphone processors and is also the second-largest tablet chip producer as well.

Motorola Mobility CEO is leaving for Dropbox

Motorola Mobility CEO Dennis Woodside says he’s leaving the company at the end of March to join Dropbox as its Chief Operating Officer.

It follows Google’s recent decision to sell its smartphone business to Lenovo.

Rakuten to acquire mobile VoIP business Viber

Japanese online specialist Rakuten, which runs a major e-commerce site in Japan as well as operating the Kobo eBook reader and Play.com brands, has acquired mobile messaging and VoIP company Viber.

The deal is worth $900 million (£538 million).

More than six out of every ten smartwatches run Android

Figures from the Strategy Analytics Wearable Device Ecosystems service show that 1.9 million smartwatches were shipped last year, with 61.1% of them (1.2 million) running a version of the Android operating system.

Much of this Android growth was driven by sales of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear watch.
