Virtual mobile network The People’s Operator, which launched in 2012 and passes 25% of its profits to charity, has appointed Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales as a board member and co-chair of the company.
The London-based MVNO says the main role of Mr Wales will be “to drive the growth of a global community that connects as a force for good”. It currently offers SIM-only ‘pay monthly’ and ‘pay as you go’ services in the UK.

Global sales still increasing
Figures from telecom analysts CCS Insight show that fewer than 14 million tablets will be sold in the UK this year.
That’s a drop of 3 million devices from last year’s total.

New research published by price comparison service uSwitch.com shows that 27% of UK children have their own tablet device by the time they’re 8 years old. That’s almost 3.5 million children.
In fact, 10.7% of children were using touch-screen devices before they were 2 years old.

Google says it’s testing a ‘smart’ contact lens that’s designed to help people with diabetes monitor their glucose levels.
The lens, which is being developed by Brian Otis and Babak Parviz within the next-generation Google X project team, contains a wireless chip and glucose sensor.

Private communications specialist Silent Circle and open source handset producer Geeksphone have announced a joint venture to produce a security-focussed smartphone.
The new device is called Blackphone and runs a custom version of Android.
