ZTE turns its mobile operations into an independent unit

Chinese telecoms equipment manufacturer ZTE Corporation has announced a number of organisational changes that are designed to “focus the company on key strategic operations and high-growth business opportunities”.

It says its three key businesses - operators, mobile devices and enterprise - will receive more resources this year, with the company also targeting the emerging market segments of metropolitan public IT systems, new energy technology and the mobile internet.

UK government contemplates allowing cheques to be 'paid in' by smartphone photo

The UK government says it’s launching a consultation in 2014 that could result in consumers taking photos of their cheques instead of taking the physical cheque to a bank.

As a result, the money could be in a customer’s account within two days rather than six.

McAfee expects mobile devices to attract most 'threat innovation' in 2014

Intel-owned online security company McAfee Labs has published its Predictions Report for 2014, using trends from 2013 to forecast the type of online threats anticipated next year.

The company says it expects the mobile platform to “draw the lion’s share of threat innovation” in 2014. Ransomware - taking control of a user’s device and asking for payment - is expected to become an increasing threat to mobile users, as are sophisticated attacks that can bypass some security measures.

Acer appoints Jason Chen as new CEO

Computer and smartphone manufacturer Acer has appointed Jason Chen as its Corporate President and CEO with effect from 1st January 2014.

Mr Chen is currently the senior vice president of Worldwide Sales and Marketing at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

Dame Patricia Hodgson confirmed as the next chair of Ofcom

Dame Patricia Hodgson has been announced by the government as the next chair of UK communications regulator Ofcom.

Ofcom’s current chair, Colette Bowe, will step down at the end of March 2014 after serving her five-year term in the role.
