The European Patent Office says 2012 was a record year, with more patent filings and grants than ever before.
Last year, the EPO received 257,744 patent filings from around the world: a 5.2% increase from the previous year.

It was concerned that standards for future mobile communications services shouldn’t be used by mobile operators as part of a strategy to close other companies down.

Revenue from mobile location-based services in Europe is forecast to grow from €325 million last year to €825 million (£707 million) in 2017, representing a compound annual growth rate of 20.5%.
That’s according to a new report from Berg Insight, which also expects the North American location-based service market to grow from $835 million in 2012 to $1,295 million (£829 million) in 2017.

Telecommunications giant Telefónica, the company behind the O2 network in the UK, has announced a number of initiatives to develop entrepreneurship in Europe by 2015.
Its plans were revealed by the company’s Chief Operating Officer during the World Economic Forum in Switzerland today.
