EE announces prices for 4G service launching on 30th October

EE, formerly Everything Everywhere, has announced tariff details for its new 4G mobile phone service in the UK. It’s launching 4G in the UK on Tuesday 30th October in Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Sheffield, Glasgow and parts of Southampton. Coverage will expand to Belfast, Derby, Hull, Nottingham and Newcastle by Christmas.

The new service will be called 4GEE and promises average speeds of 8-12Mbps.

Ofcom responds to concerns over mid-contract mobile price rises

Ofcom has announced plans for a consultation on how to protect consumers from price rises that happen within fixed-term contracts for landline, broadband and mobile phone services.

Current rules insist that communications providers give their customers at least one month’s notice of any significantly detrimental change to their contractual terms.

Average 4G data tariff is 20% dearer than the 3G equivalent

International figures from ABI Research show that 4G data currently costs around 20% more than the equivalent 3G tariff.

However, the research company says there are signs that competition is already causing 4G tariffs to fall.

UK sales of SIM-only mobile contracts set a new record

Over 250,000 SIM-only mobile contracts were taken up in the UK during July 2012, the highest figure since research company GfK began keeping records.

It means customers committed themselves to over 150,000 years of mobile phone use in that one month.
