New research says 75% of new smartphones are running Android

An assortment of figures from Strategy Analytics, IDC and ABI Research last week showed how Samsung had dominated the smartphone market in the previous quarter.

Now IDC (International Data Corporation) has published new research that shows even greater dominance for the Android operating system.

85% of new smartphones run Android or iOS

New figures from the International Data Corporation (IDC) have revealed that 85% of all smartphones shipped in the second quarter of 2012 ran either Android or Apple’s iOS.

It’s a new combined high for the two mobile operating systems, contrasting with BlackBerry and Symbian which both saw their market shares fall below 5%.

Psion to become part of Motorola Solutions

Motorola Solutions has agreed to acquire mobile computing business Psion plc in a deal worth $200 million (£128 million). It’ll then combine Psion with its Enterprise Mobile Computing business

Psion was formed in 1980, becoming a pioneer of mobile computing. It’s also responsible for the EPOC operating system, which later turned into the Symbian OS.

41 megapixel Nokia 808 PureView to start shipping in May

Nokia says its Nokia 808 PureView will start shipping from May.

The cameraphone, which was announced at Mobile World Congress, combines a 41-megapixel sensor with Carl Zeiss optics, and sophisticated imaging algorithms. Images can be produced at a maximum of 38 megapixels.

Nokia quarterly results reveal loss

Last week Nokia warned that its quarterly results would be disappointing - and today it’s published those figures.

Net sales for Q1 2012 were down 29% year-on-year to €7.354 billion, while the Q1 2011 operating profit of €439 million has become a €1.34 billion loss this quarter.
