UK mobile shopping sales to double in the next three years

Figures from Ovum and Verdict Research show that the value of internet shopping on mobile phones will more than double by 2013. The UK's m-commerce market was worth £122 million in 2009 – just 0.6% of the £21.2 billion spent on all online shopping - but is set to hit £275 million by 2013.

Although 28% of the UK adult population had internet access on their mobile phones in 2009, only 2.1% used this to shop online.

BOLT mobile browser renders its billionth web page

The BOLT mobile internet browser from Bitstream has rendered over a billion web pages. Launched in February 2009, it's now used by more than 7.3 million people in over 200 countries and has also streamed more than a thousand years of video.

As with rival mobile browsers from Opera and Skyfire, BOLT offers desktop-style page rendering by transcoding data via the company's own servers. It supports HTML5 & Flash video and is compatible with most mobile phones.

America's first 4G mobile phone breaks sales records

US mobile operator Sprint says the HTC EVO 4G broke sales records when it went on sale last Friday, although it's not quoted any specific figures. It says Friday sales of the HTC EVO 4G, which includes 3G and 4G technology along with a 4.3-inch screen and 8 megapixel camera, were the largest quantity of a single phone model sold in one day ever for Sprint.

Qualcomm invests in mobile optics company

Wireless technology company Qualcomm has made what it's calling "a strategic investment" in Anteryon, which makes camera and laser projection modules for portable devices.

Netherlands-based Anteryon, formerly the optics division of Philips, produces miniature optical module production for mobile phone cameras and laser projection. Its factories currently produce millions of imaging units every month for mobile phone manufacturers. The investment funds will be used for Anteryon’s 'WaferOptics' optical module production technology and the expansion of its Asia production facility.
