Figuring out the figures

I didn’t study economics at college, which is probably one of the reasons I have a very simple perspective on quarterly results. As far as I’m concerned, they fall into one of three categories: much as expected, better than expected or worse than expected. Anyway, it’s the time of year when some of the biggest names in the mobile telecoms industry publish their financial results – so here we go.

Quarterly results from Google and Motorola

Google’s quarterly results show consolidated revenues of $14.42 billion (£9.11 billion), up 36% year-on-year, while net income was $2.89 billion.

Revenue from its Motorola mobile business was down to $1.51 billion; the business unit made a $353 million operating loss in the quarter.

Google invests in King's Cross site for new London HQ

Google UK has bought a 2.4 acre site at the new King’s Cross Central development to build its new headquarters building.

Work on the new Google HQ, which will be built above retail units, is expected to start towards the end of this year.

Top ten gadgets for 2013

I’ve recently been talking to Theo Neumann from Wolverhampton City Radio about the top ten gadgets that are likely to hit the headlines in 2013. The most desirable, most likely to be talked about, most exciting… that kind of thing. Although my top 10 list isn’t entirely mobile-related, I thought it was worth sharing here.

Google to sell non-mobile Motorola Home business to Arris

Communications technology company Arris Group has arranged a deal with Google to buy the Motorola Home business from Motorola Mobility for $2.05 billion (£1.27 billion) in cash and around $300 million of Arris shares.

The mobile-focussed part of Motorola Mobility will remain with Google.
