Welcome to this week's UK mobile industry news summary from TheFonecast.com. After a week's holiday on the scenic north coast of Norfolk, which not only lacks cellsites but also hills to put them on, it's good to finally see the '3G' indicator reappear on my phone. My week off may have been relatively quiet - but the last few days have more than made up for it.

Today's edition of The Fonecast includes some of the biggest mobile industry news for ages. Google has announced plans to buy Motorola Mobility, Apple has managed to block the import of Samsung's new tablet and HTC is investing in the company behind the 'Beats by Dr Dre' brand.

There's big news this week as Google announces plans to buy Motorola Mobility, Apple gets Samsung's new tablet banned and HTC invests in audio technology.

Google has agreed to acquire Motorola Mobility in a deal worth $12.5 billion. Everything's expected to be finalised towards the end of this year or in early 2012.

In a blog post, CEO Larry Page said "Motorola's total commitment to Android in mobile devices is one of many reasons that there is a natural fit between our two companies."

Motorola Mobility has announced financial results for the second quarter of 2011. It reported net revenue of $3.3 billion, up 28% from the same period in 2010.

Sanjay Jha, chairman and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobility, said "With a focus on profitable growth and delivering differentiated LTE smartphones and tablets, we expect to achieve profitability in Mobile Devices in the fourth quarter and for the full year 2011."
