Around 250,000 Twitter users hit by security attack

Twitter says a security attack late last week managed to gain access to information about around 250,000 of its users. It appears the hackers gained access to usernames, email addresses and encrypted versions of passwords.

The service responded by resetting passwords for all affected accounts, which appeared to include many Twitter ‘early adopters’.

UK regulator tells parents to talk to children about mobile apps and charges

PhonepayPlus, the UK regulator of premium rate telephone services, says parents need to take control of their children’s smartphone bills and social media use - or face mobile phone bills that run into thousands of pounds.

The warning comes in a new report that highlights two areas of particular risk: free apps and social media linked to smartphones.

10,000 mobile phones are likely to be stolen in London this month

A new advertising campaign from the Metropolitan Police is warning people to appreciate the value of their possessions and to protect them from the risk of street robbery.

Radio advertisements and posters are reminding Londoners to protect mobile phones, tablets, jewellery and cash - although it’s phones that are the favourite target for thieves.

Over 4 million alarms will be connected to European mobile networks by 2016

4.3 million home and business alarm systems will be connected to mobile phone networks in Europe by 2016, according to a new report from Berg Insight.

The research company predicts that the total number of tracking devices and wireless alarm systems monitored from a European alarm receiving centre will grow from 9.1 million last year to 39.7 million by the end of 2016.
