Skype reveals new CEO and an Android app

Internet communications company Skype has appointed Tony Bates, Senior Vice President of Cisco, as the company's new Chief Executive Officer. Josh Silverman, the outgoing CEO, joined Skype from eBay's Shopping.com business in early 2008.

Mobile data usage was up 68% in the first half of 2010

Fixed and mobile broadband technology company Allot Communications says mobile data bandwidth usage increased by 68% during the first half of 2010. Video streaming consumed 35% of all mobile bandwidth, making it the largest-consuming application. Thanks in part to the continuing popularity of YouTube, it's also the single largest-growing application type, showing a 92% increase. YouTube alone accounted for 13% of mobile data bandwidth.

Microsoft co-founder takes legal action against major online businesses

A company called Interval Licensing LLC has filed a complaint for patent infringement against AOL, Apple, eBay, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Yahoo! and YouTube. The name may not be familiar but Interval Licensing is owned and controlled by Paul Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates. It generated approximately 300 patents in less than a decade – and four of those patents are the basis for the legal action.
