LG announces upgrade to Optimus L Series smartphones as sales pass 15 million

LG Electronics says it’s sold over 15 million smartphones in its Optimus L Series since launching them at Mobile World Congress last year, with one device being sold somewhere in the world every second during the past two months.

There’s now an upgraded range being prepared for an official launch at MWC 2013: the Optimus L SeriesII will comprise a number of devices with higher specifications than the original handsets and distinctive LED Lighting on the ‘home’ button.

Mobile browser companies merge as Opera acquires Skyfire

Opera Software, best known for its PC and mobile web browsers, has acquired California-based rival Skyfire Labs.

Skyfire offers consumers a mobile browser that can handle Flash Video and a variety of other video formats. In addition, its ‘Rocket Optimizer’ software can be used by mobile operators to reduce the size of video and other multimedia material when mobile bandwidth is under demand.

Almost a third of the UK's web page views now come from mobile devices

New figures from research company comScore show how UK consumers are increasingly relying on their internet connections and their smartphones.

People in the UK spent more time online than the citizens of any other European country - an average of 37 hours per month - while desktop internet usage was up 5% year-on-year to 44.8 million people in December 2012.

Leadership restructure sees new CEO for MEF

MEF, the international trade association for companies that want to make money from mobile products and services, has restructured its leadership team.

It’s created a new role of CEO, which has been filled by former MEF Executive Director Rimma Perelmuter, and has appointed Joanne Lacey to the position of Chief Operating Officer.
