Qualcomm quarterly results show profits up 36%

Mobile technology business Qualcomm has announced results for the first quarter of its financial year. Revenue was up 29% year-on-year to $6.02 billion, while net income rose by 36% to $1.91 billion.

Shipments of Qualcomm’s MSM chips for smart devices were up 17% year-on-year to 182 million units.

LG Electronics reports a quarterly loss

Quarterly figures from LG Electronics showed a net loss of 468 billion South Korean won (£272 million) for Q4 2012, although this included the results of an EU fine. Overall, LG made KRW 91 billion (£53 million) profit for the year.

Sales for the quarter were down 2.2% year-on-year to KRW 13.50 trillion.

RIM launches BlackBerry 10 and changes the company name

No more 'Research In Motion'

After a slightly awkward start in the UK this morning, Research In Motion has launched its new BlackBerry 10 platform along with the first two compatible devices.

The BlackBerry Z10 is entirely touchscreen, while the BlackBerry Q10 combines a touchscreen with a traditional physical keyboard. Both run 1.5GHz dual-core processors and have 2GB of RAM plus 16GB of expandable storage.

RIM boss ignores the questions when asked about BlackBerry difficulties and competitors

What went wrong? What did you learn from the iPhone?

Mark Bridge writes:

Live TV and radio interviews. They can be worrying things, even when you’re not expecting to be challenged too much. I know this from experience. So when your company is launching a much-delayed operating system, you’d expect a few difficult questions… and you’d be ready with a response.

The official response of RIM is apparently to ignore the questions.

Smartphones keep selling, Firefox goes mobile and BlackBerry prepares for launch
