Motorola has recently acquired software developer 280 North, although neither organisation appears to be saying much at the moment. 280 North describes itself as “dedicated to advancing the state of the art on the web”; it’s created a browser-based presentation application called 280 Slides and has also released its app-building framework Cappuccino as an open source project.

Motorola, which launched its first Android-powered smartphone last year, has just announced a replacement for the flagship device.
The 2009 launch of the Motorola DROID was seen by many as a turning point for the company. This phone was renamed the Motorola Milestone when it arrived in Europe.

Motorola has appointed Daniel M Moloney as the president of its Motorola Mobility business. He joins Motorola Mobility after serving as CEO of electronic component company Technitrol, having previously been executive vice president at Motorola and president of Motorola's Home and Networks Mobility business.

Motorola has published results for the second quarter of its current financial year. Net profit was $162 million, up from $26 million year-on-year. Total quarterly sales were $5.4 billion, down slightly on the same quarter in 2009.
The Mobile Devices unit shipped 8.3 million handsets, of which 2.7 million were smartphones. Sales were down 6% on the year-ago quarter to $1.7 billion.
