This week Amazon.com has acquired text-to-speech technology company Ivona Software.
Ivona’s technology is already used on Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets and by other businesses, application developers and individuals.

Micro-blogging site Twitter has launched its own mobile video sharing service.
It’s called Vine and is currently only available as an app for the iPhone and iPod touch, although versions for other platforms are in the pipeline.

Microsoft has announced results for the second quarter of its current financial year, covering the three months until 31st December 2012.
Revenue for the quarter was up nearly 3% year-on-year to $21.46 billion, while net income fell by approaching 4% to $6.38 billion.

Juniper Research publishes its 2012 smartphone estimates
Mobile analyst firm Juniper Research is the latest company to estimate last year’s smartphone figures.
It’s calculated that more than 200 million smartphones were shipped in Q4 of 2012, bringing the annual total to 671 million: that’s annual growth of almost 42% year-on-year.

According to the latest report from Strategy Analytics, smartphone shipments were up almost 43% last year to 700 million units.
Samsung extended its smartphone market share by more than ten percentage points while Nokia lost around the same amount.
