Carphone Warehouse announces planned closure of Best Buy UK stores

Best Buy Europe, the joint venture responsible for The Carphone Warehouse brand, plans to close its eleven so-called ‘Big Box’ Best Buy stores in the UK within the next two months.

In addition, the Carphone Warehouse Group is planning to end its American profit-sharing agreement by selling its interest in Best Buy Mobile US and Canada back to Best Buy.

European Commission investigates whether Samsung/Apple battle has breached EU antitrust law

The European Commission has asked Apple and Samsung to provide information about the patent infringement claims being made in their legal battle.

It appears the EC is concerned about so-called ‘standards-related’ patents. This refers to technology that forms part of internationally-recognised standards - and this type of technology is required to be licensed in a way that’s Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory.

Tablet users favour the living room and the bedroom, according to new report

CCS Insight has been looking at tablet usage across Europe, contacting 4,500 tablet owners in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the UK - and asking them to complete the survey on their tablet device.

Consumers in the UK were found to be the heaviest users, averaging 2.8 hours a day, with 95% of UK owners using their tablet for at least an hour a day.

New research says almost 5 per cent of Europe's online traffic comes from mobile devices

comScore has published research from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom that shows smartphones, tablets and other non-computer web-enabled devices drove 4.6% of total digital traffic in August.

91.4 million people across the five EU countries said they were using smartphones, up 46% from 2010.

European Commission pushes for the deployment of pan-European satellite phones

The European Commission wants pan-European Mobile Satellite Services to be deployed more quickly.

It’s adopted a formal decision that allows it to coordinate the efforts of EU Member States to accelerate the commercial deployment of these services and, if necessary, to enforce this action.
