NFC mobile payments will soon become mass-market according to new report

ABI Research predicts that NFC payments will be a mass market-adopted behaviour in the USA and Western Europe in 2016, arguing against analysts who say they’ll remain a hype-driven phenomenon.

Over $100 billion (£64 billion) is expected to be spent worldwide using NFC in 2016.

3,500 Nokia workers threatened by new changes

Nokia has announced new plans to ‘align its workforce and operations’ that’ll see around 3,500 jobs being cut.

Nokia’s manufacturing facility in Cluj (Romania) and its Location & Commerce operations in Bonn (Germany) and Malvern (USA) will be closing.

One in five broadband connections in Europe is now mobile

Analyst firm Berg Insight says HSPA and LTE mobile technology accounted for 20.6% of the total number of broadband connections on PCs and tablets in Europe at the end of 2010.

The number of mobile broadband subscribers grew by 33% year-on-year in 2010 to 33.9 million and is expected to keep growing to 96 million by 2016. In North America the figures were lower, with mobile broadband accounting for just 13.2% of the total number of connections.

Doro wins injunction to ban European sales of Emporia phone

Doro, which produces mobile phones aimed at older customers, has won a preliminary injunction that blocks sales of the Emporia Telme phone in Europe.

A court in Germany has ruled that Emporia’s phone infringes on the registered design of Doro devices.
