Sony reveals 13-megapixel 5-inch HD Xperia Z smartphone

Sony Mobile Communications has revealed its new flagship Android smartphone at the CES show in Las Vegas.

The Sony Xperia Z is a 4G-ready device with a 5-inch 1920x1080 screen, a 13 megapixel camera and a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor. It’s expected to be available within the next few months.

Last week we reported that public WiFi provider The Cloud had seen hotspot usage peak at four times higher than 2011 levels during the Christmas period.

Now BT Wi-fi, which operates the UK’s largest network of hotspots, has released figures that show a similar increase.

Smartphone chip revenue jumps as Qualcomm maintains its lead

A recent research report from Strategy Analytics shows that the smartphone applications processor market grew by 58% year-on-year in Q3 2012, reaching $3.8 billion.

Qualcomm was estimated to have a 42% revenue share of the smartphone applications processor market in Q3 2012, followed by Samsung with 27%.

HTC quarterly results show profit drop

HTC has released unaudited results for the fourth quarter of its 2012 financial year; audited results are expected within a few weeks.

Total revenue for Q4 reached NT$60.0 billion (£1.29 billion), operating income was NT$600 million and net income after tax was NT$1.0 billion.
