Microsoft and Nokia invest in mobile application developers

Microsoft and Nokia are each committing to invest up to €9 million (a total of around £15 million) into a mobile application development program at Finland’s Aalto University during the next three years.

It’ll be called AppCampus, it starts from May 2012 and it’s been set up to encourage the creation of innovative mobile applications for the Windows Phone, Symbian and Series 40 platforms.

Voddler announces Dolby-encoded video streaming service

Video-on-demand service provider Voddler has announced the world’s first movie streaming service for smartphones using Dolby Digital Plus audio. It’s currently available for a number of Nokia Symbian devices and is initially being offered in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland.

Dolby Digital Plus audio offers cinematic surround sound with Voddler’s streamed films.

iZettle expands to Denmark, Finland and Norway - next stop, the UK?

Mobile payment company iZettle, which launched its plug-in ‘chip card’ reader and associated mobile payment app in Sweden last year, has now launched a beta version of its service in Denmark, Finland and Norway.

The first 5,000 chip-card readers in each country will be available free of charge.

4000 jobs affected as Nokia moves device assembly to Asia

Nokia says it plans to move device assembly away from its factories in Komarom (Hungary), Reynosa (Mexico) and Salo (Finland).

It intends the three factories to focus on smartphone product customisation, while device assembly will to be transferred to Nokia factories in Asia.

17,000 jobs going at Nokia Siemens Networks

Nokia Siemens Networks has announced a new focus on end-to-end mobile network infrastructure and services, with a particular emphasis on mobile broadband.

It says business areas that aren’t consistent with the new strategy “are planned to be divested or managed for value”.
