US mobile operator Sprint has agreed to acquire the half of broadband provider Clearwire that it doesn’t already own.
It’s paying $2.2 billion for Clearwire, which offers 4G wireless broadband services and also holds a large portfolio of mobile spectrum in the USA.
The UK’s 4G mobile spectrum auction has only just started - but already there’s a second auction being planned.
That’s because the Ministry of Defence is selling some of its radio spectrum to raise money; a plan that was announced in the Government’s Spending Review two years ago.
Revenue from the global mobile advertising market is expected to reach $12.8 billion (£7.9 billion) in 2013, up from this year’s total of $8 billion in 2012.
That’s a 60% increase, according to new research from Informa Telecoms & Media.
More than 6 in 10 UK mobile phone users have a smartphone
Smartphone penetration across France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom hit 54.6% during the three-month period from August to the end of October 2012, according to the comScore MobiLens service. It found that Spain had the highest smartphone penetration in Europe (63.2% of mobile phone users) followed by the UK at 62.3%.
Spain also had the most dramatic growth, up almost 15 percentage points from last year.
Look to the future now...

It’s the week before Christmas, which can only mean one thing for the mobile industry: plenty of research news. Yes, when there isn’t anything new to talk about, a survey or forecast is the perfect way to fill the silence.
Mind you, things haven’t been entirely quiet when it comes to mobile products and services.
