MeeGo... and me come back again

It was a good week for technology stories hitting the mainstream news, thanks to the apparent appearance of a Higgs boson, Sir Alan Sugar’s YouView online TV service and football goal-line technology.

Mobile-related news hasn’t been quite so big, although plenty of well-known names have turned up in the headlines. What’s also been turning up – rather more than usual – is the presence of WiFi.

Finnish smartphone company Jolla promises a new home for MeeGo

Last year’s announcement of the Tizen open source mobile project appeared to suggest an end to the Linux-based MeeGo platform, which was formed in February 2010 with the merger of Maemo and Moblin. However, a new company in Finland is promising to keep the MeeGo OS going.

Jolla Ltd has been formed from the team that built the MeeGo-powered Nokia N9, along with a number of other MeeGo specialists.

Yahoo! and Facebook launch an advertising partnership and settle their patent disputes

Yahoo! and Facebook say they’re now working together on a new advertising partnership and are also settling the ongoing patent dispute between the two companies.

In the future we’re likely to see promotions across both Yahoo! and Facebook, along with deeper Facebook integration on the Yahoo! site.

Report says damage to Samsung Galaxy SIII was caused by external source

Last month it was reported that a Samsung Galaxy SIII smartphone had emitted “a white flame, sparks and a bang”, according to an online report by a Dublin-based student.

An investigation by Fire Investigations UK has now concluded that the damage was caused by an external energy source, noting “the device was not responsible for the cause of the fire” and revealing that the moisture detection patch had been removed from the device.

Telefonica and Visa Europe expand their UK relationship to cover Europe

Telefónica Digital and Visa Europe have agreed a partnership to develop new mobile commerce opportunities in the European countries where Telefónica operates.

It builds on the existing relationship between Telefonica and Visa Europe in the UK and Ireland, establishing Visa Europe as Telefónica’s preferred partner for the payment cards and associated mobile payment services.
