Bluetooth introduces 'Smart' branding for low-power devices

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group is adding two new brand extensions to its logo: the Bluetooth Smart Ready trademark and the Bluetooth Smart trademark.

Both refer to compatibility with version 4.0 of Bluetooth, which supports low-power peripherals.

Android app downloads have overtaken Apple, says ABI Research

ABI Research has calculated that Android overtook iOS in Q2 2011 to have the largest market share for mobile application downloads.

It says 44% of downloaded apps were for Android devices, compared with 31% for Apple’s iOS. However, the average Apple user still downloads more apps than the average Android customer.

More developer places added to start-up job fair in London

The UK’s tech and digital industry appears to be growing strongly, with Sunday’s Silicon Milkroundabout jobs fair in London rapidly filling up. It’ll see over 100 start-up companies offering 500 + developer jobs with salaries of up to £100,000.

London’s first Silicon Milkroundabout was held in May this year, welcoming over 400 attendees and 45 participating companies.

Vodafone UK updates its business tariffs

Vodafone UK is revising its price plans for sole traders and smaller businesses into set of tariffs that automatically include a number of benefits.

As well as receiving monthly allowances of data, calls and text messages that can - where appropriate - be shared between other users on the same account, Vodafone Business customers are able to use their mobile data when ‘tethered’ to a laptop or tablet and are also being given 2GB of BT Openzone WiFi per month.

If there’s one theme that dominates the last seven days – and, let’s face it, I like to find a theme wherever possible – it’s new mobile devices.

We started the week with Apple having sold over four million units of the new iPhone 4S in the first three days since its launch. This was followed by Motorola Mobility reinvigorating its RAZR brand by applying it to a high-spec Android smartphone – which in turn was followed by Google and Samsung revealing the Galaxy Nexus.
