Smartphone market predicted to grow by almost 50% this year

Figures from the International Data Corporation Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker show that the global smartphone market is expected to grow by 49.2% this year. That's over four times faster than the overall mobile phone market.

More than 450 million smartphones are expected to be shipped in 2011, compared to 303.4 million units shipped in 2010.

Nokia files new legal complaint against Apple

Nokia has filed a new complaint with the United States International Trade Commission. It lists seven Nokia patents that its says are being infringed by Apple in virtually all iPhones, iPods, iPads and Mac computers.

The patents cover multi-tasking, data synchronization, positioning, call quality and the use of Bluetooth accessories.

Apple iPhone 5 announcement on 6th June 2011?

Apple says it'll be holding its annual Worldwide Developers Conference from 6th - 10th June 2011 at San Francisco's Moscone West building.

The company has previously announced new iPhone devices on the first day of the WWDC - most recently, the iPhone 4 was revealed at WWDC 2010 - which suggests that the 'iPhone 5' could be the star of this year's show.

The Mobile Money Network plans 'Simply Tap' mobile payment service

The Mobile Money Network, which was founded by Charles Dunstone, Monitise plc and Best Buy Europe last year, says it'll reveal details of its first service tomorrow.

New non-executive Chairman Sir Stuart Rose is set to announce Simply Tap, a service that'll allow consumers using any mobile phone on any network to buy anything from retailers signed up to the platform.

ViewSonic introduces free trial offer for Android-powered ViewPad 7 tablet

ViewSonic Europe has announced a 'try for free' promotional offer that enables customers to return their ViewPad 7 tablet if they're not completely satisfied.

Dissatisfied customers are given 20 days to experience the 7-inch Android tablet; they then need to return the device within a 10-day window (i.e. within 30 days from the date on their invoice) for a full refund.
