An ABI Research survey in the USA has revealed that 53% of smartphone users say they already have or soon will use their handsets for mobile banking. In addition, almost half of smartphone users say they have or plan to use their phones to do mobile shopping.

Visa Inc. and Visa Europe have announced the commercial availability of mobile contactless payments. This is the first time in Visa’s history that a mobile contactless payment solution has been included in its list of products available for commercial deployment.

Vodafone has rolled its mobile money transfer service into Qatar and the Philippines, with plans to cover Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The service was launched in Kenya as M-PESA and is already available in several other countries, with 20 million people using it globally.

Samsung has announced a new Near Field Communications chip with embedded flash memory. The NFC chip is described as the industry's first to adopt flash for its embedded memory, which allows designers to upgrade software or firmware more easily.
