Mobile network operator Three UK has completed the first phase of its £400 million 3G network upgrade. It's added 4,900 'base stations' in the last three years, giving it a total of 12,400 sites and 3G coverage of almost 97% of the UK population.

Research commissioned by telecoms solutions provider OpenCloud says conventional voice call and text services remain the most heavily-used revenue-generating functions on mobile phones. It's warning network operators that the appetite for downloading apps appears to be over, with consumers preferring the built-in functionality of mobile phones and pre-loaded apps to downloaded applications.

Everything Everywhere, the company that manages the Orange and T-Mobile UK networks, will turn six of its mobile phone stores into dual-branded shops before Christmas. Three T-Mobile shops will have Orange branding added, with three Orange shops being rebranded to include the T-Mobile name. Both brands will be given equal prominence on the external signage.

The number of UK motorists who admit to answering mobile phone calls and sending text messages while on the road has tripled in a year,according to the 2010 RAC Report on Motoring. The number of drivers taking calls on their mobile phone was up from 8% in 2009 to 28% this year, while text messaging usage was up from 11% to 31%.
