Smartphone shipments up 43% in Q2 to 60 million devices worldwide

Strategy Analytics has calculated that global smartphone shipments grew 43% year-on-year to reach 60 million units by the end of Q2 2010. Nokia is top overall with 40% of the global market; Research In Motion leads in the Americas and is in second place globally with a 19% market share. Apple is in third place. Overall, Strategy Analytics says 19% of handsets shipped in Q2 were smartphones.

Profits down but sales volume up for Nokia

Nokia's just published its Q2 2010 figures. They show operating profit down 40% on the previous quarter (and down 31% year-on-year), although exchange rates helped net sales to increase slightly. The number of mobile devices shipped was up 8% year-on-year to 111.1 million units for the three-month period, while smartphone and mobile computer sales were up 42% year-on-year to 24 million units.

New CEO for Azzurri Communications

Voice, data and mobile communications provider Azzurri Communications has appointed Mark Quartermaine as its new Chief Executive Officer. He's leaving his current role as UK President of BT Global Services. Mr Quartermaine replaces Gordon Matthew, who joined as CEO in 2008 to allow founder Martin St Quinton more time to expand the business.

Truphone updates local call service with membership option

Mobile VoIP provider and virtual network Truphone has updated its Local Anywhere service. Until now, customers have had to choose a specific country from before receiving local rates for calls.

The company has now launched Truphone Membership, which offers local rates in all Truphone countries for just £10 a month.

Motorola takes legal action against Huawei

Motorola is suing Huawei Technologies for allegedly conspiring with former Motorola employees to steal trade secrets. Huawei has called the complaint "groundless and utterly without merit".

In 2008, Motorola sued five former workers for allegedly taking Motorola information with them when they joined one of Huawei's resellers.
