Windows Phone 7 prototypes released to developers

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system is now being released as a 'technical preview' to thousands of mobile developers. Until now, the software has only been tested within Microsoft.

Prototype phones from Asus, LG and Samsung are being sent to Microsoft developer partners, following the beta release of Windows Phone developer tools a week ago.

Nokia Siemens Networks and Motorola have entered into an agreement that should see Nokia Siemens Networks acquiring the majority of Motorola's wireless network infrastructure assets for $1.2 billion later this year.

RIM defends BlackBerry design against Apple comments

Apple's admission that its iPhone 4 has reception problems when held a certain way – and its insistence that other manufacturers have the same issues – has prompted angry responses from other manufacturers. We've heard comments from HTC, Nokia, Motorola and Samsung… and the co-CEOs of RIM (Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie) have published a joint statement on the company blog:

Text message traffic up 778% after World Cup final

Information from mobile messaging specialists Airwide Solutions has revealed a 778.4% spike in Spanish text message traffic when the 2010 FIFA World Cup final ended on 11th July in South Africa.

Takeover of WIN seems to be moving closer

A takeover of UK mobile technology company WIN plc seems to be increasingly likely. Last week WIN directors recommended accepting an offer of 141p per share from IMI mobile; today it's reported that private equity group ECI Partners is offering 150p per share. ECI's plan would merge WIN with Mobile Interactive Group (MIG).
