First Sony smartphone revealed at CES

Sony Ericsson is showing visitors to this year’s CES trade show what a Sony smartphone is expected to look like. Assuming, of course, all goes to plan with Sony’s plans to buy Ericsson out of the joint venture.

Sony Xperia S

The Sony Xperia S is the first smartphone from the ‘next generation’ Xperia NXT series and is expected to go on sale worldwide in the next month or two. It’s an NFC-equipped Android device with a 4.3-inch HD screen (1280 x 720 pixel) and a 12-megapixel camera that’s able to record 1080p HD video. Inside is a 1.5GHz processor. The phone will be loaded with Android v2.3 (Gingerbread) and will be upgraded to v4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) in the summer.

In addition, the Sony Xperia S is PlayStation Certified and will have access to the online PlayStation Store.

Other devices announced this week included the Xperia ion, an LTE smartphone that’ll be exclusive to AT&T in the US, and two new devices for the Japanese market: the Xperia acro HD and the Xperia NX.

Bert Nordberg, CEO for Sony Ericsson, said “CES marks an important milestone for both Sony Ericsson and Sony with the introduction of the first smartphones from Sony. As the market continues to evolve into a world where we consume content and entertainment across multiple screens, the Xperia portfolio will deliver a mobile experience that is an important cornerstone of Sony’s strategy to provide seamless connectivity and networked entertainment across smartphones, TV, laptops and tablets.”
