Imagine Communications buys Clearwire's WiMax operation in Ireland

Imagine Communications Group, which is already rolling out '4G' WiMax mobile broadband technology across Ireland, has acquired the Irish operations of US-based rival Clearmax. Imagine expects its WiMax network to cover 90% of Ireland within two years.

Brian O'Donohoe, MD of Imagine Communications Group, said "This is a very significant and strategic deal for us as Clearwire is one of the world's leading 4G operators. Key network and operational assets, as well as a talented technical team, will serve as a solid launch pad for expanding service and making 4G mobile broadband a reality across Ireland."

As part of the transaction, Clearwire will become a minority shareholder of Imagine. Detailed financial details about the deal weren't published.
