Ofcom cuts Mobile Number Portability to just one day

The time to transfer a mobile phone number to a new network will be cut to just one working day next year. UK regulator Ofcom says new consumer regulations will come into force on 11th April 2011, halving the current two-day maximum to a single day.

Customers who want to move their number will be given their 'Porting Authorisation Code' (PAC) immediately over the phone or within a maximum of two hours by text message.

Ed Richards, Ofcom's Chief Executive, said "Ensuring consumers can switch between communications providers by removing unnecessary barriers is one of Ofcom’s priorities for 2010/11. Being able to switch quickly and easily between mobile providers is an important part of healthy and effective competition."
