Strategy Analytics has published information about the major companies producing applications processors for smartphones during 2013.

It shows that Qualcomm remains the leading producer of smartphone processors and is also the second-largest tablet chip producer as well.

Overall, the total value of the global smartphone applications processor market increased by 41% year-on-year to $18 billion (£10.75 billion) in 2013.

Qualcomm accounted for 54% of this revenue, followed by Apple with 16%, MediaTek with 10%, then Samsung and Spreadtrum.

Apple’s share was notable because it included the mobile industry’s first mainstream 64-bit smartphone applications processor: the A7 chip in the iPhone 5S.

Sravan Kundojjala, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said “Qualcomm widened its lead over competition in the smartphone applications processor market in 2013, thanks to its LTE-integrated Snapdragon chips and strong execution. Strategy Analytics believes that Qualcomm’s multi-mode LTE technology coupled with its in-house CPU, GPU and DSP technologies made Qualcomm a force to reckon with in the mobile processor market.”

Meanwhile, the global tablet processor market grew by 32% to reach $3.6 billion (£2.15 billion) in 2013. Apple led with a 37% revenue share, thanks to its iPad tablets, followed by Qualcomm (11%), Samsung (10%), Intel and MediaTek.
