Last week at The Fonecast: 7th October 2013

Compare and contrast

Mark Bridge writes:

Talk about a difference. In preliminary results last week, HTC announced its first-ever quarterly loss while Samsung revealed record quarterly profits.

Curiously, many of the week’s other news stories also had a companion headline to provide a contrast.

We had a new luxury Android phone from Vertu and a UK release date for the flagship LG G2. Ofcom figures showed that fewer children had mobile phones, while other research told us that mobiles were essential management tools for mothers.

Virgin Mobile co-founder Tom Alexander was appointed non-exec chairman of Viacloud as Vodafone CFO Andy Halford confirmed his planned departure from the mobile network.

There were plans for a UK trial of 'white space' wireless technology and for improved mobile broadband connections on railway journeys.

The only story that didn’t really have an associate was the update to Twitter’s planned stock market launch. Well, who’d want to start making comparisons, eh?

On Monday mornings we summarise the past week’s mobile industry headlines in a newsletter that’s very much like this article. To receive it, simply register your email address at TheFonecast.com by clicking the link at the top right-hand corner of our home page.
