New UK mobile benchmark says EE is best for data while Three is best for voice

A new survey from testing services company P3 communications has ranked EE as the ‘best in test’, noting that it offered the best national data performance. Three was ranked second overall but had the best voice performance in the test.

The P3 benchmark involved several weeks of testing, with two measurement cars driving more than 3,500 miles, collecting more than 160,000 data samples and conducting around 16,000 voice calls. An area accounting for roughly 20% of the UK population was covered, including cities and connecting routes.

Measurements included voice call quality, success rates, data upload and download speeds, website access and video performance.

Out of a maximum 500 points, EE scored 366, Three scored 316, O2 scored 283 and Vodafone scored 280. Overall, the networks provided better services in larger metropolitan areas than in smaller cities and on connecting routes.

Peter Seidenberg, Managing Director of P3 communications, said “Comparing the UK results with other P3 mobile benchmarks in Europe and Australia makes it clear that much better performances are achievable. But the good news for all UK mobile customers is that the newest technology potentially provides for much more capability than is currently implemented. We expect to see significant improvements by the time the next testing cycle begins.”
