Everything Everywhere will generate over a fifth of the UK's telecoms revenue this year

A new report from Pyramid Research says Everything Everywhere, the company behind the merged Orange and T-Mobile UK businesses, has become the country's telecom market leader. It estimates that 21% of total UK telecom market revenue will come from the new company.

The new report expects the UK telecom market to generate a total of $376 billion (£243 billion) in revenue between 2010 and 2015, driven by investments in new high-speed broadband access infrastructure, 3G+ network upgrades and coverage expansion. UK mobile data revenue will grow at a CAGR of 12.7% between 2010 and 2015, when it will account for 47.5% of total mobile revenue.

Stela Bokun, the report's author, said "The UK mobile market, which hosts four mobile operators and a number of MVNOs, has gone through major turmoil with the merger of T-Mobile and Orange in 2010. The two operators, which had roughly 21% of the market share of subscriptions each in 2009, have formed a new entity, Everything Everywhere, which now controls around 42% of the mobile services market. As the two operators begin to benefit from economies of scale achieving a number of operational synergies, their share of subscriptions will see a significant rise of roughly 4 percentage points by 2015 and their share of the total UK telecom service revenue will grow by 3 percentage points by 2015".

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
