Are we waiting for mobile marketing to make a move?

At the beginning of the 21st century I moved from Vodafone to work for its Vizzavi multimedia portal, wooed by talk of context-specific advertising that would one day use a customer’s location and search history to ensure any ads were precisely targeted. And I’m not the only person who’s been seduced. Consumers, ad agencies, client companies and mobile networks have all been promised much by mobile marketing.

Yet more than a decade later that kind of sophistication seems to be lacking from most mobile marketing messages.

Apple reported the first drop in quarterly profit for several years as figures fell by 18% to around £6.1 billion. On the positive side, it made around £6.1 billion profit. ...and why Mobile Termination Rates need to fall

Due to growth in staff numbers my business (51Degrees.mobi) is in the process of moving offices. Coincidentally I'm also moving our home broadband. It’s not been a pleasant experience.

This got me thinking, because a few weeks ago on thefonecast.com we discussed why Ofcom isn’t treating Mobile Termination Rates (MTR) in the same way as fixed-line termination rates. The mobile industry justifies higher MTRs on the assumption that a mobile network costs more to run than a fixed-line network. It was certainly true when the fixed costs of running a mobile network had to be shared across a relatively small number of customers, even if they did pay a fortune for their contracts and terminals. Intuitively I'd say that’s just not true anymore.

Samsung partners with Barnes & Noble to produce co-branded Nook tablets

Samsung Electronics America and the Nook Media subsidiary of Barnes & Noble have announced a partnership to develop Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook tablets.

The co-branded mobile-enabled tablets will combine Samsung’s Android-powered Galaxy Tab 4 hardware with customised NOOK e-reader software, making it easier for users to download and read eBooks, magazines and newspapers.

A 7-inch version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook is expected to be released in the USA in early August, although further availability hasn’t been confirmed.

Michael P Huseby, the CEO of Barnes & Noble, said “We are very excited and proud to partner with Samsung, a world-class technology and tablet leader, to create customized co-branded devices featuring our valuable NOOK reading experience and digital content catalog for Barnes & Noble customers nationwide. Standing behind these great new devices will be the power of our 40,000 Barnes & Noble booksellers combined with our deep bookselling and retail expertise to provide sales support and personalized in-store customer service for our lineup of new Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 NOOK products. Partnering with Samsung brings our customers great new products and evidences our commitment to our NOOK customers and growing our digital content business.”

Last year Barnes & Noble said it would end production of own-brand colour-screen Nook tablets, although it’ll continue to offer its Nook GlowLight eBook reader.

This is exciting news! For far too long has Kindle dominated the e-reader market! Perhaps this power partnership could be just what the market needs to inject a healthy bit of excitement and competition into it! The Nook hasn't proved as popular as the Kindle but if you look at the two devices compared side to side (a good comparison to be found here: http://versus.com/en/barnes-noble-nook-glowlight-vs-amazon-kindle-paperwhite) you can see that it stands up well. Maybe Samsungs arrival on the seen will finally let this David conquer its Goliath!!
