Vodafone and Three plan to merge their UK businesses

New Hutchison/Vodafone network would be biggest UK operator

Vodafone Group plc and CK Hutchison Group Telecom Holdings Limited have agreed to combine their UK telecommunication businesses, respectively Vodafone UK and Three UK. The merger will create a large new network operator to compete with Virgin Media O2 and EE.

Vodafone announces annual results

Vodafone has announced its annual results for the year ending 31st March 2010. Group revenue increased by 8.4% to £44.5 billion, with service revenue increasing by 8.9% to £41.7 billion. Group EBITDA was £14.7 billion, up 1.7%, and adjusted operating profit was £11.5 billion. European service revenue dropped 3.5% to £28.3 billion.

The company's proportionate mobile customer base is now 341 million, having seen 8.5 million net additions during Q4. Data revenue exceeded £4 billion, up 19.3%, with over 50 million customers now using data.

US wireless market generates $12.5 billion from data in Q1 2010

Chetan Sharma Consulting has published its Q1 2010 update on the US wireless data market. It says mobile data service revenue was up 5% on the previous quarter and 22% year-on-year, exceeding exceed $12.5 billion (around £8.6 billion) and on track to hit $54 billion for the year.

In addition, it notes that Verizon Wireless has overtaken NTT DoCoMo to become the world's biggest mobile data operator by data revenues.

Orange cuts charges for text message donations

Orange is the latest UK network to cut its charges for charities that collect donations by text message, following similar action by O2, Vodafone and WIN plc.

The company says it'll now pass on 90% of all SMS donations between 15p and £10 to any registered charities. It gives 100% of all text donations to its own charity partners including Comic Relief, Sports Relief, Children in Need and the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
