A third of adults are mobile gamers, says research

New figures from PopCap Games have shown large increases in the usage and frequency of mobile game playing among US and UK adults.

33.6% of all adults in the USA and the United Kingdom say they’ve played a game on their mobile phone handset in the past month, with almost a quarter (24.6%) having played in the past week. The figure was much higher for smartphone users; 83% of them had played in the past week.

Overall, 73% of UK respondents and 44% of US respondents said they’d played a mobile phone game at least once in the past.

Dennis Ryan, EVP of Worldwide Publishing at PopCap, said “Mobile games are, along with social games, the hottest sector of the video game industry by far. As more people purchase smartphones and the entire process of finding, purchasing and playing mobile games becomes as simple as browsing the internet, the mobile games market is going to accelerate even more.”

PopCap, which is responsible for mobile games including Bejeweled and Plants vs Zombies, commissioned the survey from Information Solutions Group. A total of 2,425 mobile phone owners were surveyed by ISG in January 2011.
