This year's Mobile World Congress was notable for the number of product launches by handset manufacturers. To get a better understanding of smartphone manufacturing, we spoke to Johan Lodenius of semiconductor company MediaTek.

He gave us a simple overview of how 'fabless' manufacturing works, discussed developments in smartphones and wearable devices, contemplated the end of the PC era and talked about the importance of driving costs down.

The number of contactless transactions via mobile handsets is forecast to exceed 9.9 billion globally by 2018, up from just over 3 billion this year. That’s according to a new report from Juniper Research.

Two factors are expected to boost this growth: HCE (Host Card Emulation) and an Apple iWallet

This week marks the silver anniversary of the World Wide Web. It’s 25 years since Sir Tim Berners-Lee wrote a proposal to improve communications at the CERN research organisation; a proposal that would eventually lead to the creation of a browsable ‘web’.

This ‘worldwideweb’ was designed to use the internet; a connected network of computers that started in the 1960s when the US military and US-based universities began linking their internal computer systems.
