Mark Shockley to run Motorola's global mobile sales

Motorola has appointed Mark Shockley as 'senior vice president, Global Go-to-Market' for its Mobile Devices business. This means he'll be responsible for overseeing all aspects of Motorola’s Mobile Device sales operations globally and will report to Sanjay Jha, the Motorola Co-CEO who runs Motorola’s Mobile Devices and Home Business.

Mr Shockley joined Motorola over thirty years ago; his most recent roles have been within Motorola's Mobile Devices organisation.

Mobile payments could be on the way after all

Cash is still king… but its days are numbered. That’s the message from a new report published this week by the Payments Council.

The Payments Council, which is a group of financial institutions that sets strategy for UK payments, has released ‘The Way We Pay 2010’. It shows how the last decade has seen a fall in the percentage of transactions using cash, from 73% in 1999 to 59% in 2009. In just five years time, cash transactions are expected to represent less than 50% – and a further fall to 45% is expected by 2019. Meanwhile, debit card spending in the UK rose from £65 billion in 1999 to £264bn in 2009.

UK mobile mapping usage has increased 86% in the last year

18% of UK donors gave to Haiti earthquake campaign by mobile

Research from the Mobile Marketing Association and Lightspeed Research has revealed that almost a quarter of all UK, French and German people surveyed had donated to the Haitian Earthquake relief efforts. A total of 28.4% of these donors had used their mobile phones to pledge money; 21.4% via text and 7% by visiting a website from their mobile device.

In the UK, 9% of all donors used text and 8.6% visited a website from their mobile phone. However, mobile usage was much higher in France and Germany, where text donations came from 30% and 26% of all donors respectively.
