Are mobile networks about to cut down on free WiFi?

Mark Bridge writes:

I don’t mind paying for a spot of WiFi when I need it. Admittedly I’d prefer to find a coffee shop with a free hotspot but I’ll pay if I really need a connection. Not just here in the UK but abroad too.

London Underground confident of WiFi roll-out in time for Olympics

Mobile Marketing magazine has an exclusive statement from Gareth Powell, Transport for London’s director of strategy and service development, in which he says London Underground expects to have WiFi service in place in time for this summer’s Olympic Games.

Last March, London Underground invited telecoms companies to tender for providing public WiFi service in tube stations by June 2012. The winning bidder was originally expected to be announced last year.

O2 to create Europe's largest free WiFi zone in London

An agreement between Westminster City Council, the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea and O2 is going to result in the largest free WiFi zone in Europe.

Free WiFi will be available to millions of residents and visitors using laptops, tablets and phones in the Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea areas of London.
