Ofcom has announced that fixed-line and mobile network providers in the UK must offer a new ‘next generation’ text relay service to all customers who require it within the next 18 months.
The current text relay service service, which is available to people with hearing and speech impairments, involves an assistant who converts speech to text and vice versa for two people having a conversation. However, it can be slow and offers little opportunity for a genuine ‘real time’ conversation.

Virgin Media says its WiFi service on the London Underground is to remain free for the rest of this year. The service was originally expected to introduce ‘pay as you go’ charging after the 2012 Games ended.
It’s also announced that 27th September was the first day Virgin Media’s WiFi service delivered over one million individual online sessions on the Tube.

O2 UK has revealed its plans for dealing with the aftermath of last week’s UK network outage that saw millions of customers without mobile service for several hours.
