Microsoft has put an official date for the Windows Phone 8 mobile OS in the diary.
It’ll be talking about - and presumably demonstrating - Windows Phone 8 to the press in San Francisco on 29th October, just a few days after the launch of its tablet and desktop Windows 8 operating system.

Motorola Mobility has updated its August announcement that around 20% of staff were to lose their jobs.
An official filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission notes that “Motorola has continued to refine its planned restructuring actions and now expects to broaden those actions to include additional geographic regions outside of the U.S.”

Samsung Electronics has announced its earnings guidance for the third quarter of 2012. These figures are regularly revealed a few weeks ahead of the formal quarterly results announcement.
Consolidated operating profit is expected to be around 8.1 trillion Won (£4.5 billion).

Social network Facebook has confirmed that one billion people now regularly use the service. It actually passed the milestone figure of 1 billion active monthly users on 14th September.
600 million users currently access Facebook via mobile devices.

In July we reported that a new Finnish company called Jolla had been formed from a team of specialists that had worked on the MeeGo-powered Nokia N9. It planned to release a smartphone with a new user interface based on MeeGo.
A few days ago Jolla Ltd announced a new ecosystem alliance to support a MeeGo-based mobile OS codenamed ‘Sailfish’ and today it’s confirmed a date for the public unveiling of its user interface.
