Microsoft hits Motorola with Android-related legal action

Yesterday Microsoft filed a patent infringement action against Motorola that relates to Android-based devices, with the Motorola Droid 2 named as an example in most of the nine claims.

Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Microsoft's Intellectual Property and Licensing team, said "The patents at issue relate to a range of functionality embodied in Motorola’s Android smartphone devices that are essential to the smartphone user experience, including synchronizing email, calendars and contacts, scheduling meetings, and notifying applications of changes in signal strength and battery power".

All the UK's 'big five' mobile networks will offer Windows Phone 7 smartphones

Microsoft says the UK's major mobile network operators – Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Three – will be offering Windows Phone 7 devices when the mobile operating system launches later this year. In addition, The Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4u will also be selling the phones. However, a UK launch date still hasn't been confirmed.

Zune is heading to the UK for the Windows Phone 7 launch

Microsoft says it's expanding Zune, its digital entertainment service, into more than 20 countries – including the UK. Zune's music and video services will be available on Windows-based PCs, on Windows Phone 7 handsets and on the Xbox gaming console later this year.

Microsoft launches Mobile Advertising SDK to put ads in Windows Phone 7 applications

Microsoft's advertising business has launched two new products today: a Mobile Advertising software development kit (SDK) for Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft Advertising Exchange for Mobile, which it's describing as "the industry’s first real-time, bidded ad exchange in mobile".
