Telefonica and RIM announce NFC mobile wallet trial

Telefónica Digital and Research In Motion have announced an NFC-based mobile wallet.

It’s called the ‘Telefonica wallet for BlackBerry’ and currently supports the BlackBerry Bold 9900, BlackBerry Curve 9360 and BlackBerry Curve 9380, all of which have NFC connectivity and run the BlackBerry 7 operating system.

17,000 jobs going at Nokia Siemens Networks

Nokia Siemens Networks has announced a new focus on end-to-end mobile network infrastructure and services, with a particular emphasis on mobile broadband.

It says business areas that aren’t consistent with the new strategy “are planned to be divested or managed for value”.

Market for sports and health apps will treble in five years

​ABI Research says the sports and health mobile application market will grow to be worth over $400 million (£258 million) in 2016, up from $120 million in 2010.

Much of that growth is expected to be driven by the ability of mobile handsets to connect to wearable sports and fitness devices.

UK mobile penetration expected to exceed 150 per cent by 2016

The latest report from Pyramid Research says smartphones are expected to account for 90.8% of all handsets sold in the UK by 2016, driving the demand for mobile data.

Data card adoption and an uptake in machine-to-machine services are predicted to see mobile penetration in the UK reach 152.8% (98 million subscriptions) by the end of the next five years.

Dog tracking company Retrieva does European mobile roaming deal

Retrieva, the UK-based company that produces dog tracking collars with built-in GPS tracking, has announced a deal with specialist virtual mobile network Podsystem.

It’ll allow Retrieva to use Podsystem’s MultiNet Europe SIM cards for a premium roaming service that’ll simplify costs and will allow European owners to track their dogs across national borders.
