US mobile operator Sprint has agreed to acquire the half of broadband provider Clearwire that it doesn’t already own.
It’s paying $2.2 billion for Clearwire, which offers 4G wireless broadband services and also holds a large portfolio of mobile spectrum in the USA.

The UK’s 4G mobile spectrum auction has only just started - but already there’s a second auction being planned.
That’s because the Ministry of Defence is selling some of its radio spectrum to raise money; a plan that was announced in the Government’s Spending Review two years ago.

Revenue from the global mobile advertising market is expected to reach $12.8 billion (£7.9 billion) in 2013, up from this year’s total of $8 billion in 2012.
That’s a 60% increase, according to new research from Informa Telecoms & Media.

More than 6 in 10 UK mobile phone users have a smartphone
Smartphone penetration across France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom hit 54.6% during the three-month period from August to the end of October 2012, according to the comScore MobiLens service. It found that Spain had the highest smartphone penetration in Europe (63.2% of mobile phone users) followed by the UK at 62.3%.
Spain also had the most dramatic growth, up almost 15 percentage points from last year.

It’s the week before Christmas, which can only mean one thing for the mobile industry: plenty of research news. Yes, when there isn’t anything new to talk about, a survey or forecast is the perfect way to fill the silence.
Mind you, things haven’t been entirely quiet when it comes to mobile products and services.
