Heathrow Express, the BAA rail service that connects central London and Heathrow Airport, has launched a free BlackBerry and Android application that allows users to buy tickets and receive the ticket direct to their mobile phone.

Technology company NCR – probably best-known for its cash registers and ATMs – has acquired mobile content optimisation specialists Mobiqa. Edinburgh-based Mobiqa uses SMS, MMS, web links and email to deliver barcoded tickets – including airline boarding passes - to mobile phones. NCR, although based in the USA, has an R&D facility 60 miles away in Dundee.

Online rail ticket service
thetrainline.com is planning to release a 'transactional' version of its mobile app later this month, enabling consumers to buy train tickets via their mobile phones. The current application, which is only available for the iPhone and other iOS devices, will be updated – and new versions will be produced for Android, BlackBerry, Nokia and other handsets.

Mobile ticketing company Masabi is to receive a $2 million investment from London-based m8 Capital. The money will support Masabi's introduction of mobile ticketing on UK railways and will also be used for international expansion.
