I remember the 1980s. In fact, I rather enjoyed them. Hang on a sec, hear me out. There really was some good stuff there – not least the renaissance of "sisters doin' it for themselves". Oh, and the launch of the UK's first cellular mobile phone network.

EU funds €10 million project to get web applications running across mobile, PC, TV and cars

The EU says it's invested 10 million Euro in the three-year webinos project, which aims to deliver a platform for web applications across mobile, PC, home media (TV) and in-car devices.

America gets its first commercial 4G LTE mobile phone service

This week Dallas-based MetroPCS Communications has become the USA's first mobile operator to launch commercial '4G' LTE services. It's also offering the first commercially-available LTE mobile phone, the Samsung Craft.

Summer smartphone sales give the European mobile market a welcome boost

The mobile phone market in Western Europe grew just 1.5% year-on-year to 43.3 million units in the second quarter of 2010, with smartphone growth offsetting a fall in the sale of traditional handsets. International Data Corporation's Mobile Phone Tracker says smartphone shipments were up 60% on Q2 2009 to 14.6 million units, while traditional phone sales fell 14% to 28.7 million units. That means 34% of all devices shipped were smartphones, up from 28% in the previous quarter.

Samsung Galaxy Tab is officially revealed as the company's first tablet device

Samsung has announced the Samsung GALAXY Tab GT-P1000 at the IFA electronics show in Berlin. The device, which featured in an online 'teaser' video last week, is an Android-powered tablet with a 7-inch (1024 x 600 pixel) screen. As well as including 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0, the Galaxy Tab also offers quad-band GPRS and tri-band 3G HSUPA/HSDPA connectivity.
