O2 has launched what it's describing as "the first ever eco rating system for mobile phones in the UK. It's persuaded six of the largest handset manufacturers to participate - Nokia, Sony Ericsson, HTC, LG, Samsung and Palm – and has placed the Sony Ericsson Elm top out of the 65 mobiles it surveyed, giving it an 4.3 out of 5 (86%) Eco rating.

Samsung has revealed details of its forthcoming tablet computer in an online video. The Samsung Galaxy Tab will apparently have a 7-inch screen, a built-in camera that supports video calling and will run Android 2.2. It's expected to offer HD movie playback and, like the Galaxy S smartphone, will include Swype software for text entry. A formal launch is expected at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin on 2nd September.

There's a new British World Record holder for sending text messages from mobile phones. Okay, so it's currently unofficial... and it's a promotional opportunity for Samsung and Swype... and it's just for touchscreen phones... but that's not stopped us celebrating.

The European Imaging and Sound Association has awarded the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini 'European Mobile Phone 2010-2011'. It's an award chosen by the editors of special interest magazines across Europe. (No UK mobile publications are currently represented among EISA members).

Research company Gartner says worldwide mobile device sales reached 325.6 million units in the second quarter of 2010, a 13.8% increase year-on-year. 19% of all those sales were smartphones, up 50.5% from Q2 2009.
